Simplify: A Guide to Caring for the Soul by Carolyn J. Rasmus

To simplify is about enhancing our ability to focus on things that really matter, to deliberately choose our priorities and to refuse to let unimportant things take over the things of real importance….To simplify requires that we look at things in a different way with a larger, even eternal, perspective.

With life’s tendency to move at an increasingly fast pace, where time is a precious and rare commodity, and where the voices of the world are vying relentlessly for our attention and the Spirit becomes nearly impossible to hear – everyone needs this guide to “caring for the soul”. I personally found significance in this book’s concepts as we have recently added our second child to the mix and are now striving to find a new balance but there isn’t a single walk of life that will find these ideas irrelevant.

Rasmus emphasizes that simplification is not just an organizational principle. Rather it is a spiritual effort which dictates we evaluate, adjust and reestablish our priorities to be more aligned with true principles and practices.

Rasmus uses the word “simplify” as an acronym for eight key principles essential to  achieving our goal of spiritual alignment and simplify. The acronym reads:

S – Stillness

I – Integrity

M – Mercy

P – Prune

L – Let Go

I – Impossible

F – Fortify

Y – You

As evident by these keys, the author brings a uniquely fresh perspective to the things that bring peace to our lives. She incorporates ideas, such as ensuring that our behaviors are reflective of our beliefs and granting forgiveness to those who may have wronged us, as important aspects to consider as you go through the process of simplification.

This book has an overarching feeling of accompanying peace. Her voice communicates a softness of the Spirit that leaves the reader feeling not only that they now possess important tools but that those tools will bring about the desired results as they exercise faith in Christ.
